An archaeological survey is a field investigation conducted prior to disturbances to locate all archaeological sites in the project area. An archaeological survey includes a background research or literature review at the State Historic Preservation Office.
This research determines if any portion of the project area has been survey for archaeological sites. The research also determines if archaeological sites are known in the project area, and if so whether sufficient information exists to apply the National Register Criteria for Evaluation. Upon completion of the literature review a field investigation will be conducted. The field investigation includes interviewing landowners, tenants, and artifact collectors, a site investigation, collection of artifacts exposed on the surface, hand excavation of test pits, mechanical excavation of trenches, and remote sensing. National Register Criteria for Evaluation, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and State Historic Preservation Office standards are applied to each site.
